This week, we honor the legacy of Zumbi dos Palmares at Zumbimba. Known as a powerful symbol of freedom, Zumbi was born in 1655 in Serra da Barriga, a region now part of União dos Palmares in Alagoas, Brazil.
A legendary leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares, Zumbi resisted colonial oppression and fought tirelessly for the liberation of enslaved Afro-Brazilians. Married to Dandara dos Palmares and father to several children, Zumbi’s courageous spirit lives on in Capoeira and our shared history.
His death on November 20, 1695, symbolizes resilience and resistance in Afro-Brazilian culture—a legacy we proudly honor every November.
