Program Overview

This 8-class course is designed for Capoeira enthusiasts who want to expand their Portuguese vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension, and conversation skills, all while immersing themselves in the culture and history of ABADÁ-Capoeira.

Each class will be an interactive experience, featuring:

✅ Thematic vocabulary & grammar focus
✅ Listening and reading practice
✅ Dialogue creation and role-playing
✅ Deep dive into the history of ABADÁ-Capoeira Mestres
✅ Capoeira music and cultural expressions

Not only will you gain practical Portuguese skills, but you'll also explore the stories of the legendary Mestres who have shaped ABADÁ-Capoeira, preserving its philosophy, discipline, and artistry.

Class Breakdown

Class 1: In a Capoeira Class – Meet & Greet

🎯 Focus: Basic greetings, introductions, and essential phrases for Capoeira interactions.
📌 Vocabulary: Greetings (Oi, Olá, Tudo bem?), self-introductions (Meu nome é…, Eu sou de…), Capoeira terms (Mestre, Professor, aluno, roda, jogo).
🗣️ Dialogue Practice: Meeting someone for the first time in a Capoeira class.
🎧 Listening/Reading: A short dialogue between two Capoeiristas greeting each other.
📖 History Highlight:

Grão Mestre Camisa Rocha – The visionary behind ABADÁ-Capoeira.

Class 2: Visiting a Capoeira Studio – Introducing Yourself & Others

🎯 Focus: Talking about where you train, introducing yourself and others.
📌 Vocabulary: Nationalities, Capoeira groups, formal vs. informal speech, studio-related words.
🗣️ Dialogue Practice: Introducing yourself to a new group of Capoeiristas.
🎧 Listening/Reading: A short text about a Capoeirista visiting a new studio.
📖 History Highlight:

Class 3: Going Out with Capoeira Friends – Chit Chat

🎯 Focus: Conversational Portuguese for social settings.
📌 Vocabulary: Ordering food, asking about preferences, making small talk.
🗣️ Dialogue Practice: Inviting friends to go out and chatting at a café or restaurant.
🎧 Listening/Reading: A short conversation among Capoeiristas after training.
📖 History Highlight:

Mestre Cobra – A master known for his precision, agility, and dedication.

Class 4: In the Capoeira Studio – Meeting an International Student

🎯 Focus: Helping a non-Portuguese speaker navigate a Capoeira class.
📌 Vocabulary: Directions, encouragement, explaining movements.
🗣️ Dialogue Practice: Assisting a new international student in class.
🎧 Listening/Reading: A short conversation about explaining basic Capoeira rules.
📖 History Highlight:

Mestre Canguru – Expanding Capoeira beyond Brazil.

Class 5: At a Fair – Performing Capoeira & Following Directions

🎯 Focus: Understanding instructions and responding in action-based conversations.
📌 Vocabulary: Movement names, event-related words, performance-related phrases.
🗣️ Dialogue Practice: Following directions during a Capoeira demonstration.
🎧 Listening/Reading: A short text about preparing for a public Capoeira performance.

Class 6: Telling Friends About Your Trip – Past Tense & Meeting Mestre Camisa

🎯 Focus: Sharing experiences using the past tense.

🎧 Listening/Reading: A Capoeirista recounting their visit to Rio and meeting Mestre Camisa.

Class 7: Planning a Trip to Brazil – Future Tense & Travel Vocabulary

🎯 Focus: Talking about future plans and travel arrangements.
📌 Vocabulary: Booking flights, hotels, transportation, making travel plans.
🗣️ Dialogue Practice: Discussing an upcoming trip to Brazil.
🎧 Listening/Reading: A travel itinerary for a Capoeirista visiting Rio.
📖 History Highlight:

Class 8: Visiting Rio de Janeiro – Exploring & Describing Experiences

🎯 Focus: Talking about places, directions, and cultural experiences.
📌 Vocabulary: Landmarks, neighborhoods, transportation, expressions for getting around.
🗣️ Dialogue Practice: Asking for directions and describing places.
🎧 Listening/Reading: A short travel blog entry about visiting Rio de Janeiro.
